press release from Debbie Fincher

6/29/07

My friend Martha Isbister lives here, but has a friend who taught Camp Invention in Idaho last year. Martha shared this information with me and as mom's of curious kids, we looked at how we could bring this to our island.

Dori and Kate Sears stepped up and took the acting role as Director and Teachers for this on-hands science based day camp. The camp filled it's maximum numbers with 31 local kids. This camp is offered in 44 states and in over 800 sites.

Dori and Kate created modules in the 4H Building at the San Juan County Fairgrounds. The kids got to create Planet ZAK, build amusement park rides, improve safety features for a car manufacturer and "reinvent" using old appliances which they took apart.

We had tremendous support from local businesses and foundations, to help cover expenses in running a camp such as this and offering scholarship dollars for those in need.

The kids get to show off their inventions during the Inventor's Showcase today at 2:45pm. The kids will even learn how to fill out patent applications! What a great experience they all had. Thank you Dori and Kate.... Debbi Fincher
