‘TIS THE SEASON FOR … SINGING!

San Juan Island’s community chorus, the San Juan Singers, returns with a new choral director as the group shares the songs of the holidays on Saturday, December 15 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, December 16, at 2:00 pm.

“Here We Come A-Caroling” includes classical and contemporary songs for the winter season.  The program features instrumental and vocal artists, including soloist Corinne Stevens, flautist Pam Stewart, and harpist Mary WillAllen.  Pianist Jenepher Reeves accompanies the group.

This will be the first San Juan Singers program directed by Angel Michaels, who took the helm after longtime director RuthE. Wells moved off-island this past spring.  Michaels has been singing or directing most of her life, and is passionately dedicated to keeping vocal music “alive and well” and accessible to singers and audiences of all ages.  “Some years, the Singers bring you a holiday feast of masterworks or classical traditionals; this year, we’re offering settings of familiar carols and sacred songs, classical and popular,” said Michaels.  “After all, we are your friends and neighbors, singing songs that touch our hearts, and we hope, yours.”

Michaels received her B.A. in Vocal Performance and has a Master’s in Vocal Pedagogy (teaching voice).  In addition to her new role with San Juan Singers, Michaels teaches voice and directs the island Barbershop Harmony Society chapter, Island Chordsmen Plus, and the female a cappella group, Sound Vibrations.

Michaels says the holiday program will offer many opportunities for guests to join in the carols, including a traditional “Hallelujah Chorus” finale.
